Zenwalk releases v4.2 standard and live CDs from desktoplinux.com >>

The Zenwalk project over the past two weeks has released both installation and live CD editions of its “mini” Linux distribution. Both versions feature a 2.6.18 kernel, an Xfce default desktop environment, and support for GNOME as a desktop alternative.

ZenLive 4.2, the live CD version released today, “complements the speed and stability you’ve come to expect from Zenwalk,” the team said in the release announcement. “ZenLive-4.2 is an ultra-modern Live CD with emphasis on multimedia, gaming, networking, system tools and development. It is a portable and customizable Zenwalk GNU/Linux system for everyone, anywhere. We hope that you will enjoy this new release as much as we enjoyed creating it.”

The project team has been working quickly. It released its v4.0 last Nov. 20, and v3.0 on Sept. 8.

Zenwalk Linux, formerly known as Minislack, is a Slackware-based GNU/Linux operating system with a goal of being slim and fast by using only one application per task and with focus on graphical desktop and multimedia usage.

Some of the key changes in v4.0, according to the release announcements include:

* Zenpanel, a new system configuration panel, makes customizing the Linux system easy
* A new panel layout and RSS feed reader were added to Xfce, among other enhancements
* Howl has been replaced with the more modern and supported Avahi Zeroconf subsystem.
* Python has been upgraded to version 2.5 to bring new features and stability to the overall system
* The original Tango-derived icon theme is back
* Fam has been replaced with Gamin, resulting in noticeable speed increases to file and directory monitoring

Baseline features of ZenWalk/ZenLive v4.2 include:

* Xfce desktop environment
* Firefox browser
* Thunderbird email client
* GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
* GNOME Office
* Abiword 2.4.6 text editor
* GNUmeric 1.7.6 spreadsheet editor

Additionally, the Mplayer multimedia system replaces Gxine and comes both with Theora support as well as a ready to use Firefox plugin, the team said. The Mplayer version included in Zenwalk has patches created by Zenwalk to enhance the GTK2 GUI and add session support.

New games are included in ZenLive-4.2 include: Ceferino Hazaña, Foobillard, Frozen Bubble 2, Lbreakout 2, Mega Mario, Supertux and Wormux.

The ZenWalk Linux project distribution touts itself as offering the latest Linux improvements along with a complete programming environment and libraries to provide an ideal platform for application programmers. Zenwalk’s modular approach also provides a simple way to convert Zenwalk Linux into a finely-tuned modern server (e.g. LAMP, messaging, file sharing), project team spokesman Jean-Philippe Guillemin said.

You can download both the 406MB Zenwalk 4.2 install CD and the 476MB ZenLive v4.2 live CD iso images from the main Zenwalk mirrors, here. The install CD image file is located here (direct link to iso), and the live CD image iso file is here (direct link to iso).
