Happy to see Dell with Linux pre-installed, Happier to see Dells with no OS whatsoever.

According to desktoplinux.com we can see Novell’s SLED 10 (SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop) soon pre-installed on Dell Laptops.

I personally am happy to see this, but……
Is it not so that most linux-users have their own preferred distro ?
For example:
First thing I would do is replace Suse for Ubuntu/Debian.

My point is; why not also sell Dell laptops with no OS pre-installed?
Linux-users usually know how to install their favorite distro and will do so anyway.
It might save us even some more wasted money also.

Yes I’m glad to see Dell with Linux pre-installed on Laptops.
But I would be happier with Dell laptops with no OS pre-installed which would save me time and some more money.

  1. What would be the difference if it came with Windows or Suse, if you’re going to format the HD and install Ubuntu anyway? At least the one with OEM Windows is likely to provide you with a mail-in-rebate for your laptop. That’s just commonsense dude. But perhaps money is no object.

Actually, Wal-Mart has been selling desktops and laptops with Linux pre-installed for several years now. Dell is just jumping on the bandwagon.

The way I see it, is if you buy a laptop with Linux already installed on it, then you can pretty much be sure that your hardware is completely supported, whereas otherwise, you might be just guessing. So if I had a choice between having Windows installed, no OS installed, or Linux installed, I will go with Linux pre-installed –knowing that the hardware will work without problems with the OS.
