Flock, “The social web browser” on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn… No working flash ?

Filed under: Browsers, Tuxicity, Ubuntu — tuxicity @ 9:59 am

In Getdeb.net , Flock is available now as a nice Debian package for Ubuntu Feisty Fawn.

So I downloaded Flock with Firefox and let Gdebi handle the installation, which went flawless.

Flock installed itself into /usr/share/ (strange choice but hey) and I decided to link the contents of the mozilla plugins to the flock plugins.

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/* /usr/share/flock/plugins/

All done and set to go but….. Flash did not work

Flock tells me in the statusbar: The plugin initialization failed. Reload the page to try again.

So after removing the Flock-Package ‘sudo apt-get remove flock’ I decided to try a manual install:

Downloaded Flock with Firefox from the Flock downloadpage.
Extracted the package using Nautilus.
Moved the Extracted folder to /usr/local/

sudo mv flock/ /usr/local/

then made a symlink of the executable of Flock to /usr/local bin/ to make flock execute without having to key in the path:

sudo ln -s /usr/local/flock/flock /usr/local/bin/flock

and symlinked the plugins of Mozilla into the pluginfolder of Flock.

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/* /usr/local/flock/plugins/

Now I fired up Flock (keyed in flock in my terminal) and everything went fine
but…Still no working flash!

So if anyone knows how to get flash going, (Java and all works fine) let me know; I want to finish this scribble properly.

Tuxicity.

  1. Go to a flash containing page(youtube). The rest of instructions are given in the upper part of the web page window(install …).

  2. All I did to get Flash working was go to a website (such as jayisgames.com) that demanded website be installed. I got the whole “You’re missing a plugin” notice, and installed Flash right through the browser. Without a restart, Flock had working Flash.

  3. And, of course, I meant a website that demanded FLASH be installed… not a website that demanded WEBSITE be installed… who’s my stupid proof reader anyway? 😉

  4. Maybe it is just the fact that you symlinked the plugin – try a hard link and make sure it has world-executable permissions

  5. Hmmm I also have installed flock on Ubuntu Feisty—flock package from getdeb.

I install the flash player manually.

Extract the flash player, find files: flashplayer.xpt and libflashplayer.so

Put the flashplayer.xpt into /usr/share/flock/components/ and
    libflashplayer.so into /usr/share/flock/plugins

    Restart Flock.

Browse to a web page with embedded flash, e.g. http://www.detik.com

  6. I had the same problem as described above (Ubuntu, beta2-2 pack from getdeb). To resolve it, I did the following:

    sudo ln -s /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so /usr/share/flock/plugins/libflashplayer.so

This created a file with these default permissions:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 46 2008-09-04 16:27 libflashplayer.so -> /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so

Restarted flock, and everything is working now. Hope this helps.

  7. Hey..I’m a total newb. This is what I got when I tried it in the command line on 8.10:

    su@(computer name):~$ sudo -s /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so/usr/share/flock/plugins/libflashplayer.so
sudo: unable to resolve host (computer name)
    /bin/bash: /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so/usr/share/flock/plugins/libflashplayer.so: Not a directory
    su@(computer name):~$

Followed the path to the flash player.so, but when I get to usr/share/flock/plugins/ I see a file that says libnullplugin.so

I am assuming that the command string above is supposed to change this .so file to libflashplayer.so? I’m stumped.
