Installing Sun Java(TM) JRE 1.6.0 (Mustang) in Ubuntu Edgy and Dapper

Add to your repository, for Edgy:

deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb edgy 3v1n0
#deb-src http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb edgy 3v1n0

GPG Key Information, if yo wish to add do:

wget http://3v1n0.tuxfamily.org/EDD1E155.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add –

For Dapper:

deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb dapper 3v1n0
#deb-src http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb dapper 3v1n0

Now continue:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install make-jpkg-mustang
sudo make-jpkg-mustang

When all is done check your active java-version with:

sudo update-alternatives –config java

  6. Oops will not install on Dapper said worng package for i386 will not install at all down load went well, just will not install.

  8. In Feisty JRE 1.6.0 is available in the Ubuntu repositories, in edgy its now also available in the Ubuntu backports repositores

  9. the correct syntax for update-alternatives is “sudo update-alternatives –config whatever”

    There are 2 “–”

  13. And normal ppl would do:
    1)sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre
    2)cd /usr/lib/ferefox/plugins
    3)ln -s and so on from jre plugin dir…..

  14. Amazingly, using the latest build of mustang from the page (6.0.0.2 I think, from april 2007) as opposed to the version you can get from Feisty repositories, all of the issues I was having with swing applications not working with GTK widgets using beryl/compiz are now fixed. Thank you!
